What is a thermal printer and how does it connect to a POS?

Thermal printers are one of the most misunderstood pieces of restaurant POS hardware. A new operator may search for a “POS machine” when the real setup is just a computer, POS software and a receipt printer. Others buy a printer and then discover that USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi all behave differently.

Plainly: a thermal printer is the device that prints receipts, kitchen tickets or order slips from your POS. It is not the POS software, not the cash register, and not the bank payment terminal. It prints by heating special thermal paper, so it does not need ink or toner.

What is a thermal printer used for?

In cafes and restaurants, thermal printers usually handle:

  • Customer receipts: Short receipts printed at the counter after payment.
  • Kitchen tickets: Production slips sent when an order is fired.
  • Bar or station tickets: Drinks can go to the bar, desserts to pastry, mains to the kitchen.

The value is speed and clarity. During a rush, the kitchen sees the table, items, notes and time without waiting for someone to shout the order.

Why does it not need ink?

Thermal printers use heat-sensitive paper. The print head applies heat to the paper and the text appears. That means no cartridges and no toner, which keeps maintenance simple.

The trade-off: thermal paper can fade with heat and sunlight. It is excellent for operational tickets and normal receipt workflows, but regulated fiscal receipts and long-term records depend on your local compliance setup.

58mm or 80mm?

For restaurants and cafes, 80mm thermal receipt printers are usually the better choice. Product names, modifiers, table numbers and notes are easier to read.

58mm printers are smaller and cheaper, but they can feel cramped in a kitchen. They may work for a simple kiosk or very small counter. For cafes, restaurants, bars, bakeries and delivery operations, the practical default is: choose 80mm.

USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth?

The connection type decides how the printer talks to your POS.

USB printer

A USB printer connects directly to one computer. It is simple when you have one counter PC and one printer.

Pros:

  • Affordable and widely available
  • Easy for a single computer
  • Clear physical cable connection

Watch-outs:

  • Other tablets or phones cannot print to it directly without a local bridge or agent
  • If the connected computer is off, printing stops
  • It is less flexible for multi-device restaurants

Ethernet printer

An Ethernet printer connects to the local network by cable. Devices on the same network can reach it.

Pros:

  • Better for multiple tills, tablets or kitchen stations
  • More stable for a fixed kitchen printer
  • Cleaner as the restaurant grows

Watch-outs:

  • The printer IP should be fixed
  • Router and switch setup must be tidy
  • Initial setup is a little more technical than USB

For most serious restaurant setups, an 80mm Ethernet printer is the stronger long-term choice. USB still works, but Ethernet gives you more room to grow.

Wi-Fi printer

Wi-Fi can help where cable is difficult, but kitchens are not always friendly to wireless printing. Walls, distance, weak signal and crowded networks can delay tickets. For fixed kitchen and counter printers, use Ethernet when you can.

Bluetooth printer

Bluetooth is more common for mobile or compact printers. It can work for temporary stands, delivery handoff or simple mobile scenarios. It should not be your first choice for a busy kitchen printer.

How does a printer connect to POS software?

The usual flow:

  1. Plug the printer into power.
  2. Connect it via USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
  3. Install the driver if the operating system needs one.
  4. Print a test page.
  5. Add the printer inside the POS.
  6. Route each ticket type to the right printer.

Can one printer handle both receipts and kitchen tickets?

For a small venue, yes. One printer can print both customer receipts and kitchen tickets.

As the operation grows, separate printers are cleaner:

  • Counter receipt printer
  • Kitchen production printer
  • Bar printer
  • Delivery or packing printer

This reduces mistakes and keeps each station focused.

Does the cash drawer connect to the printer?

Often, yes. Many cash drawers connect to the back of the receipt printer. When the POS completes a cash payment, it sends a command to the printer, and the printer kicks the drawer open.

If you plan to use a cash drawer, check that the printer has a drawer port. Not every small thermal printer does.

Buying checklist

Before buying, check:

  • 80mm paper support
  • USB and Ethernet if possible
  • Auto-cutter
  • Windows driver availability
  • ESC/POS command support
  • Cash drawer port
  • Easy-to-find paper rolls and adapter
  • Clear warranty, invoice and return terms

For kitchen use, do not buy only by lowest price. Paper jams, weak cutters and poor support are expensive during service.

In Turkey and similar markets, search terms include:

  • 80mm thermal receipt printer
  • POS receipt printer USB Ethernet
  • Restaurant receipt printer
  • Kitchen printer
  • Thermal POS printer

You can buy from POS and barcode hardware suppliers, local computer service companies, online marketplaces or restaurant automation vendors. If possible, choose a USB + Ethernet model so you can start simple and move to network printing later.

Common mistakes

Avoid these:

  • Buying a 58mm printer only because it is cheaper
  • Buying USB-only when the venue will need network printing
  • Putting a Wi-Fi printer in the weakest corner of the kitchen
  • Not fixing the IP address of an Ethernet printer
  • Forgetting the cash-drawer port
  • Thinking the printer is the POS system
  • Confusing kitchen tickets with regulated fiscal receipts

Kitchen and order tickets are operational outputs. Fiscal receipts, e-invoices and tax compliance depend on your local accounting and fiscal-device setup.

Do not forget the POS computer

A printer does not run by itself. It needs a device and POS software. That device can be a touch-screen POS PC, a normal Windows computer, a tablet in some cases, or a local print bridge depending on the setup.

The point of a thermal printer is not just paper. It is making sure every order reaches the right station at the right time.

A small cafe can start with one counter computer and one USB printer. A restaurant with table service, delivery, bar and kitchen stations should plan around Ethernet printers and proper print routing.
