If your kitchen still runs on paper tickets spiked on a rail, a kitchen display system is one of the upgrades that pays for itself fastest. Here’s what a KDS is, how it works, and why a screen beats chits.
What a kitchen display system is
A kitchen display system (KDS) is a screen in the kitchen that shows orders the moment they’re sent from the till or the floor — replacing printed paper tickets (chits). Each order appears as a card with its items, modifiers and a table or order number, and the kitchen works straight from the screen.
Why a screen beats paper tickets
Paper is fragile. A printer jams, a ticket falls behind the pass, two chits get shuffled, the ink fades on a hot line. A KDS removes all of that: orders can’t get lost, they arrive instantly, and everyone — line, pass, expo — sees the same thing. It also kills the classic “did that order go in?”, because it’s on the screen, timestamped.
How orders flow: new → preparing → ready
A good KDS gives every order a clear state. A ticket lands as new, the kitchen bumps it to preparing, then marks it ready when it’s up. Colours and timers show how long each ticket has been waiting, so nothing ages out and the oldest order is always obvious. Once it’s done it’s bumped off the screen — no clutter.
The run board (the pass)
Alongside the kitchen view, a run board (or pass board) shows what’s ready to run to tables or hand over for takeaway. It’s the bridge between the kitchen and the floor: the kitchen marks an item ready, front of house sees it immediately and runs it. Fewer plates sitting under the lamp, fewer “where’s my food?” moments.
Less waste, fewer missed tickets
The operational wins add up fast: no reprinting jammed tickets, no remaking a dish because the chit was lost, far less paper, and a clear record of timings you can actually review afterwards. On a busy night, “nothing gets lost” is worth more than almost any single feature.
Do you need a separate KDS?
Often not. Standalone KDS hardware and subscriptions exist, but if your POS already includes a kitchen display and a run board, you get the same benefit with no extra box and no extra bill — and it’s already in sync with every order the till takes. That’s the simplest setup to run and maintain.
Garivio POS includes a kitchen display and a run board out of the box — new / preparing / ready, in sync with the register, no separate subscription. See Garivio POS, read how to choose a POS, or book a walkthrough.
